For learning technology tools and on-demand faculty resources, please visit CAL’s website.

Students: Due to inclement weather, the university will be closed to face-to-face operations. Instruction will be moved to emergency remote, including synchronous and asynchronous methods. Certain laboratory, clinical, and other hands-on classes for which in-person instruction is a requirement may necessitate a make-up lesson, but every effort will be made to pursue virtual learning to the extent possible. Where synchronous virtual instruction is intended, published class meeting times must be observed so that students’ schedules are not disrupted.

The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader community remain our top priority. We will continue to provide updates regarding the status of the university’s academic and administrative offices as conditions change.

Please continue to check our website and social media channels for the latest information.

If you have any safety concerns, contact OPSEM at 202-274-5050. For all immediate emergencies, call 911.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and to UDC’s mission.

Special Education - BS

Program Overview

Bachelor of Science in Special Education

In the Bachelor of Science in Special Education program, you will learn how to serve children and young adults from diverse communities. Our program focuses primarily on the education of students from ages three to 21, with an emphasis on professional interaction with their families.

As you navigate the program's curriculum, you will learn to respond to the unique developmental and cultural aspects of each student, ultimately gaining experience in designing, implementing and evaluating curricular activities and learning environments that harmonize with diverse urban communities.

At UDC, not only do we want to equip you with the tools you need to be an impactful instructor, also to share your skills with the world. To ensure this, our Bachelor of Science in Special Education program was strategically designed to fulfill the non-categorical teacher certification requirements for the District and other school systems.

During your time in the program, you will work with our faculty to explore a comprehensive curriculum designed to meet the unique needs of students in urban settings. This curriculum emphasizes applying effective teaching methods and learning strategies within K-12 learning environments. Through your coursework and practical experiences, you will develop the competencies needed to assess the academic, social and behavioral needs of exceptional children and youth within multi-ethnic urban school settings.

Accreditation

The special education program is accredited by the D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
