Faculty: Reach out to your immediate supervisor and/or the dean for questions and further instruction regarding the transition to emergency remote instruction (ERI).  The Center for the Advancement of Learning (CAL) is available to support faculty with instructional continuity, including support for Blackboard, Zoom, Webex and other teaching and learning technologies.

Students: Due to inclement weather, the university will be closed to face-to-face operations. Instruction will be moved to emergency remote, including synchronous and asynchronous methods. Certain laboratory, clinical, and other hands-on classes for which in-person instruction is a requirement may necessitate a make-up lesson, but every effort will be made to pursue virtual learning to the extent possible. Where synchronous virtual instruction is intended, published class meeting times must be observed so that students’ schedules are not disrupted.

The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader community remain our top priority. We will continue to provide updates regarding the status of the university’s academic and administrative offices as conditions change.

Please continue to check our website and social media channels for the latest information.

If you have any safety concerns, contact OPSEM at 202-274-5050. For all immediate emergencies, call 911.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and to UDC’s mission.

Teaching

Teaching - MAT

Program Overview

Master of Arts in Teaching

Earn a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree from the University of the District of Columbia and elevate your career as an educator. Our program's structure uniquely accommodates your journey toward enhancing your expertise in education with the convenience of a condensed timeframe—perfect for the busy schedule of a working professional.

The MAT program was intentionally designed as a one-year program, with classes offered twice a week and scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., after the working day is done. Our program offers additional learning opportunities, as well as mandatory participation in Saturday seminars, which provide valuable opportunities for in-depth discussions, collaborative projects and hands-on learning experiences.

Our faculty, all of whom are experienced educators and practitioners, will provide you with invaluable lessons in the art of teaching, classroom and behavioral management and catering to a diverse student population. Many of our adjunct faculty members are active principals in the D.C. public school system and act as one of the many connections that UDC has with our community's public schools. It's these relationships that allow UDC to pair candidates with professional mentors and explore additional opportunities for hands-on learning.

The MAT program was developed to nurture socially conscious classroom practitioners, especially in the context of urban education, acknowledging the distinct challenges, opportunities and needs prevalent in high-poverty, high-need schools, with a special emphasis on the District of Columbia. Throughout the program, you will be immersed in a rich curriculum crafted to equip you with the skills and perspectives needed to have a positive impact on your future school(s) and community.

Accreditation

The program is accredited by the D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
