Associate of Arts in Education

Support the academic growth of children in your community and beyond with an Associate of Arts in Education degree from the University of the District of Columbia! Through our program, you will receive a comprehensive background in developmental theory, with an emphasis on the practical application of theory to appropriate environments for culturally, linguistically and developmentally diverse children. 

Student Educator

With the help of our skilled faculty, you'll learn what it takes to develop the physiological, psychological, cognitive and sociological perspectives of children from birth through adolescence. The program's curriculum was specifically designed to meet your needs as a professional working in a variety of early childhood settings, including:

  • Public and private daycares
  • Child development centers
  • Kindergarten programs
  • Head Start
  • Pre-school
  • School-aged care programs

Note: The education program complements the competency requirements for the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and the standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

To qualify for admission to the community college at UDC, you must first take the Accuplacer test. This is a requirement for all entering students. Education Program Admission

As a candidate, you must complete practicum and field experiences critical to many courses in the curriculum. You must be admitted into the program while in the first education course, ECED 104C.

To be admitted into the program, you must:

  • Complete an application for admission
  • Receive clearances for health, police, Child and Family Protective Services Registry and federal fingerprinting
  • Earn a grade of C of better in all required English and mathematics courses
  • Have a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 to qualify for graduation from the program

Note: Only grades of C or better are transferable to the Van Ness campus.
